Mentors have a positive impact on Little Brothers and Little Sisters every day, whether they’re meeting up one-on-one with a child at a local elementary school or leading a virtual group of kids in fun activities together over Zoom. Each individual relationship between a Big and a Little contributes to a culture of friendship, trust, and fun that extends beyond our organization into the entire community. Volunteers are also instrumental as part of our many community events and fundraisers, helping us to ignite the potential of youth throughout the region. NVW 2021 | Submitted By: Burnaby School District
Burnaby has been providing food security to over 200 families during the pandemic. We could do this important work without the support of Joe Gallo and his family. As a long time volunteer at one of the community schools in in Burnaby, Joe was looking for a way to help others during this unprecedented time in our lives. Every two weeks, Joe, Lynda and their son Brandon come to a local community hall to unload trucks of food. They also sort, pack and help distribute food hampers to volunteers who come to pick them up. Their contributions do not stop there – they are always on the go – breaking down boxes and cleaning up the hall before heading home. We truly appreciate the support of dedicated volunteers like Joe, Lynda and Brandon! South-East Food Hub Community School Coordinators.

“I took a photo of myself cleaning up the beach in my neighbourhood. I have been doing this almost every day for about 7 months now. Rain or shine, I will be there to pick up trash. People in my neighbourhood start to recognise me and I have already had a lot of interesting conversations with the people I meet on the streets and on the beach. My goal is to inspire others to do the same or to bring awareness about pollution. “

Each individual relationship between a Big and a Little contributes to a culture of friendship, trust, and fun that extends beyond our organization into the entire community. Volunteers are also instrumental as part of our many community events and fundraisers, helping us to ignite the potential of youth throughout the region. We’re so thankful to have a team of dedicated, passionate volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern BC!

During the pandemic, we identified that our clients in the Shuswap needed social interaction to create a sense of belonging within the community. To address this need, we hosted outdoor winter activities, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, to help enhance mental wellness and create an opportunity to safely engage with others. The volunteers at Shuswap Immigrant Services Society gave their time to not only guide us on the trails but to also ensure the mandated health and safety protocols were met. Volunteers made sure participants remained in their cohorts and followed the safe distancing requirements. Without our volunteers, events like these would not be possible.

“I took a photo of myself cleaning up the beach in my neighbourhood. I have been doing this almost every day for about 7 months now. People in my neighbourhood start to recognise me and I have already had a lot of interesting conversations with the people I meet on the streets and on the beach. My goal is to inspire others to do the same or to bring awareness about pollution.”

“These Volunteer55 Ambassadors are dedicated volunteers in the Central Okanagan. Some of them have been donating their time for over 75 years! KCR Community Resources is recognizing them for their commitment to their roles, their passion for making a difference, and their tireless dedication to organizations throughout the Central Okanagan. They are all aged 55+ and want to encourage others to get involved by volunteering in their community. Volunteer55 focuses on raising the quality of life for both individuals and the community-at-large by encouraging those ages 55 and better to share their skills and time through volunteerism and by encouraging non-profit organizations to actively recruit and enlist the help of older adults to achieve their missions. Volunteering helps with social isolation by promoting inclusion and participation as part of healthy aging strategies … and yes, even in times of social distancing, there are great ways for everyone to volunteer. Volunteers are at the heart of our organization and impact our community in so many different ways. In 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, the Richmond Christmas Fund helped brighten the holidays for 2,866 low-income residents, providing them with grocery vouchers, toys, and gift cards. This effort was made possible by a team of 71 volunteers, who contributed 1,390 hours registering clients, sorting and packaging toys, and supporting the distribution process. They stepped up when their community needed them most, and during a year to forget, they made the holiday season one to remember.
